Maxion Wheels Launches Solar Power Farm In South Africa
Maxion Wheels’ light vehicle aluminum wheels plant in Johannesburg, South Africa, is now using power from their own solar farm. The new 2.9 MWh photovoltaic system – installed by the energy company Terra Firma – is a significant milestone in the Company’s goal of reducing its carbon footprint. Adding solar power to the plant’s energy mix underscores Maxion’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and advance environmentally responsible manufacturing. The energization was celebrated during Maxion Wheels South Africa’s 60th anniversary event.
Maxion Wheels’ Johannesburg solar project is the Company’s eighth solar program and is integral to its sustainability strategy, Roadmap Zero, with global commitments to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. The car park and ground mount solar installation will reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 5,100 tons each year and supply around 20 percent of the plant’s yearly energy needs. A second phase of additional rooftop solar capacity is scheduled for completion in Q1 2026, with the possibility of integrating a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for energy arbitrage and backup power.
“The 60th anniversary of Maxion Wheels South Africa is an opportunity to celebrate our legacy of manufacturing excellence while looking ahead to how we can continue strengthening our leadership and resilience for decades to come,” said Milos Despotovic, Managing Director, Maxion Wheels South Africa. “For manufacturers such as Maxion Wheels, where electricity is one of the largest input costs due to energy-intensive processes, managing energy spend is critical to maintaining competitiveness. Solar power offers an accessible solution that enables manufacturers to reduce and manage costs, improve resilience and reduce climate impact.”
“We thank Maxion Wheels for entrusting Terra Firma as their energy partner to bring this project to life,” said Grant Berndsen, CEO, Terra Firma. “Together, we’re demonstrating how solar power helps enable long-term sustainability, resilience and global competitiveness for South Africa’s automotive manufacturing sector.”
The launch event was attended by Mark Gerardts, CEO, Maxion Wheels; Roberto Antonello, Director Aluminum Operations Europe & Africa, Maxion Wheels; Milos Despotovic, Managing Director Maxion Wheels South Africa; Grant Berndsen, CEO, Terra Firma and Ian Nelson, COO, Terra Firma.
